Looking for slot reds
I kept most of the bait alive and with nothing important to do today I took the bay boat out still in search of the elusive redfish keepers. The bulls are out there waiting for us to throw them something but the little guys are on the move as the river is dropping. I took the bellies from the 2 trout we caught yesterday and headed to a spot I have marked. Once the sounder showed I was where I wanted to be I used the anchor function on my trolling motor to hold me there. That function in itself is worth the price of the trolling motor and the 112 pound thrust laughs at the wind and currents. I missed my first red snapper or whatever it was that broke me off during the fight. I retied and put on another 1/2 of the trout belly and this time I had a 26 inch red snapper on deck. My next drop and I had a 24 incher to make my limit of 2 fish. With my catch iced down I started my search for slot reds. I set my trolling motor to navigate along a rock jetty and just relaxed casting to the rocks while the motor carried me along the jetty at the speed I selected. Man I am glad I did the trolling motor upgrade. I was not doing well in the catching phase of my adventure but enjoying the ride. I moved to another area I wanted to look at and once I set the motor to hold me in place I made a few casts. Now we have some action. I get a drag burner but not a bull. It is a good fish and running around well. I was surprised because it never came to the surface and once I saw it I realized it was a very nice trout. This trout was just short of 20 inches. I soon had another and decided to test other baits against live shrimp. My Vu Du shrimp Cajun Pepper was just as hot but the Mo Jo shrimp were no where in comparison. It was not my intention to fill up the meat locker so I had fun testing things out while covering my iced down red snapper. I cut it off at 10 or 12. I was not actually counting but figured that was enough fun. Final count was 11 trout to 21 inches. I left them biting. Chances are they will not be there tomorrow. I moved on to many other places. I found clean water and had a few small bites but the redfish were not being nice to me today. The river has dropped so fast I feel they are moving in at this time. My largest trout was just under 21 inches. These were very heavy fish and good fighting. Even without finding redfish I had a very successful day out there. Life is Good! Fishing is not a matter of life or death. It's more important than that. CAPT HOOP -- OUR FREEDOM |
