Default Rutherford Beach

Made a run yesterday to the beach. Fishing was slow but still managed to put three bulls in the box and had another break off. My nephew got to catch his first bull red so that was great. Caught them on cut mullet as usual. The bite was super super light. Not the drag screaming, rod bending hook ups that usually happens. Had to pay close attention to tell a bite from just normal wave action of the rod..
I hadn't been fishing in way too long so overall it was a good day. Two 25lbers and a 28lber.

Thanks for the report. Beautiful fish. Great job. Nice pictures.

One of the reason I love beach fishing is that even a slow day can put a lot of meat in the box.

Still working on a plan. We need to deconflict schedules then find lodging. I'll send a PM. Most likely 3rd or 4th weekend.

never been beach fishing before, what's the general gameplan here? Let the bait drift out about 100yards or so on the bottom?

The bait doesn't usually drift. The game plan is to cast out as far as you can, often wading out a bit to gain more distance from the shore. 100 yards is possible with a good tail wind, a 12+ ft surf rod, and a skillful throw.

Rutherford is nice, because it gets deep more quickly than a lot of beaches, so casting distance is not as crucial. We've caught bull reds on 8 ft rods closer to 150 ft out, but the 12 ft rods 200-300 ft out are much more productive. Rutherford beach is also nice because you can drive on it.
