Gamakatsu hooks breaking
Just wondering if anyone has heard of or had first hand experience of gamakatsu hooks snapping on fish? They?re all I fish with worm and swimbait wise but now I?m beginning to rethink that. Guy at work said he had 3 or 4 break on him.

Size? No problems with 7/0 on redfish, drum, and sharks.

4/0 and 5/0. I?ve had a few straighten on me but those were on chopiques and they were 1/0-3/0 size. Never had one break. Never really had a problem with them.

Been using gamakatsu and owner for years. No problems. Use the correct hook for your application, i.e flipping hooks for flipping and you won,t either

For some reason the ones I had this morn were bending. I only had a few left. I buy Owners. That?s all. They are great!!!

The regular EWG's are pretty flimsy. I started using the superline and like them.

I use Gamakatsu hooks for many of the saltwater and bass flies I tie. No problem. However I probably don't put nearly the stress that some baitcast anglers do when setting the hook. I can tell from tying on these hooks that they are not made for bendback or spoon flies where the hook needs to be bent. Unlike Mustad SS hooks, they do sometimes get stress fractures in the shank.
For my baitcast and spinning tackle, I use Tru-Turn and Owner. No problems with those. |
