Default Two Days of Hard Work

As our good weather streak and incredible trout fishing came to a screeching halt, it came time to do some work. I had Phillip Miller and his grandson Phillip Patton with me for the last 2 days. The winds were way up and the challenge was thrown on the table to make the best of their trip down to Louisiana from Texas. I had found some bass on Thursday and I was hoping to get on them first thing yesterday morning but they weren't biting. Plan B went into effect and we went looking for slot reds. Those didn't want to bite either and we hit the best holes I knew about looking. We tried shrimp on the bottom and under a cork but it wasn't meant to be. Plan C was to send some whole crabs to the bottom of a deep hole and pray for something to eat. With clean ice we hit the bull red hole around 10:30. The boats already in the hole all morning only found 1 bull red to bite. Things were looking pretty grim when the light switch kicked on and they started chewing. We hooked up to several bull reds and black drum boating our 3 man limit by late afternoon. Today we counted on the bulls to bite again first thing but again we were let down. We went on the prowl for slot reds deep in the marsh. A nice flounder dirtied the ice but the reds were ghosts. We made a short move to some more protected marsh and I was just about to give up on the area when we hooked up. Little Phil struck gold with a spoon and put the first keeper slot in the box. A few casts later and number 2 hit the deck. I thought we were on to something and then we went another hour before finding number 3. We fished hard til 2:00 without getting another bite. We definitely earned these fish this weekend putting in full days of work and the guys did great making the most out of horrible conditions.
