GPS for boat or a handheld? Any handheld will do just fine for what 95% of people use. Even the $100 ones will do way more than most people ever use. The brands are kinda like a Ford vs Chevy/Canon vs Nikon debate, I have always had a Garmin and are partial to those because I am used to them. A Garmin eTrex is about as simple as they come and will probably do more than you will ever need and are cheap. The software that comes with them allows you to use Google Earth for your aerial images as well as topo maps.
