Default Thoughts on Salty Cajun Tournament 2015

My family and I greatly enjoyed the 2014 Salty Cajun Tournament and we are hoping to participate again this year. As usual, our Summer calendar is beginning to have demands, and the sooner a date is announced, the sooner we can work to keep our schedules clear.

I am also hoping that the "Trash Fish" category that I won last year can be renamed something less deragoratory like "Rough Fish" or "Other Species." The black drum (which wins this category most years) is actually Louisiana's most important commercial finfish (by harvest weight and value). The fishery would also benefit if anglers were more inclined to keep black drum and gafftops because of how these species prey on oysters and compete for food with their preferred targets. If the organizers are willing to rename the category, I will once again donate my winnings (and I do intend to win again) back to the charity chosen to benefit from the event.

I appreciate all the people who contribute to the hosting of such a wonderful event, from the volunteer cooks, to those assisting with facilities, those donating prizes to the raffle, the weighmaster, sponsors and participants. There really is a tremendously friendly atmosphere and great food on tournament day. While I appreciate all the event means to the charity, it also means a lot to the sport of fishing in the Lake Charles area and how the community participates in passing the sport along to the next generation.

it would be a waste of a good eating fish but I think "w" and a few others would like to see a category for "who catches the most gaftops" and they must be kept to be counted so they are taken out of the water (but then take the fishermen's word about it and dump em in the trash lol)

I think they had limited the categories to simplify the record keeping but I do agree black drum shouldn't be called "trash fish" so I like the idea of "other" as a category but then what if you have a big sheepshead, big black drum, big gafftop, and big croaker? each guy should be recognized for it. I mean it feels bad to lose to a coin flip when all might be a true big fish in its own species.

im not suggesting any prizes for these extra categories, but bragging rights or even just a Salty Cajun tee shirt is good enough for most of us, long as our name gets put up on the board

A Tournament for charity would be fun. I hope it comes together again.

I'm actually giving that some thought right now. I can do July 4th, 25th and August 1st as possible dates. July 4th is the southwest LA rodeo so that makes it tough. I will be at the world series with Mason and playing in tournaments until the end of June. Football starts up in August with tryouts the weeks in July I did not list. I'm crazy busy but I don't want to see us not do an event this year just because I'm busy.

Default Thoughts on Salty Cajun Tournament 2015

Fishing sounds fun real early and real late, but wallowing in sweat under a tint with hot pots and pits during mid day is for the birds.

Just get your three fish early and go back to the dock and chill
