Default Shimano Calcutta.

I have a brand new Calcutta and since yesterday i can't cast it further than maybe 20'. It was casting fine but now it's like the brakes are stuck on it. I loosened it up as much as it would go but when I cast its like it's brakin. Anyone had this problem?

The calcutta should have the variable brake system. Check those the more of them that in pushed down the looser the spool will be.

Tba Calcutta is a standard bait casting reel.

Sounds like it got some sand or salt in it. Might be time to clean it.

Shimano instead of using magnets for their brake system invented a Variable Brake System (VBS) which utilizes centrifugal force for a more consistent cast in terms of distance.
If you ever need to adjust the VBS the take down is quick and easy. The Calcutta features three adjustable thumb screws for maximum convenience and easy maintenance. The sideplate comes off with a single thumb screw, meaning anglers never have to remove their spool from the wheel while they adjust the brakes.

Hmm. I've owned a lot of calcuttas and this is the first time I've had a problem. Like I said it brand new. I might bring it in to lct and let them look at it.

If in fact it is brand new, that would be my first stop without a dought.

I own 3 calcutta's and i've had to adjust the brakes on all of them, they come set with all the brakes on but one, it's really easy to release the brakes and is common practice. If you release all of them watch out, i usually leave one or two sets of brakes on.

pull the slide plate, you will see i think 6 of them. Its like a little sleeve over rods, just push them down, they will just slide into place, i'm at work so i don't have my reels in front of me

this vid shows the VBS and how to adjust it.. on the new calcutta 200 size, you have to unscrew the largest setscrew on the handle side of the reel.. when it is fully unscrewed, the oposite sideplate will pop open.. you can adjust your brakes from there. hope this helps.

I'd have to bring it back don't want it to do it again. Even if you adjust the brakes could be something internal that fricked up
