Default Boykin spaniel

got my boykin about 2 years ago. Noticed lately he has started getting aggresive toward people. all shots are up to date. seems to be overly protective. Would having it spayed or nutered help any?

Our Boykin just suddenly died in his sleep (6 years old) a couple weeks ago. He was a good dog (great for ducks)...a bit timid and definitely not over-protective. Boykins are human-pleasers, so they do exactly what they think you want them to do. You should be able to correct their behavior with only verbal reprimands. If not, neutering may be the best option.

I just feel neutering takes the "drive" out of a hunting dog and they also tend to get overweight quick for some reason.

Good point. On the otherhand, I've seen several retrievers that were fixed both male and female that never missed a beat. I think that with proper nutrition and regular exercise there is a good chance that neither the drive or health problems will be an issue. When I say regular exercise, I mean long swims and runs a few times a week if not daily. I'm speaking of retrievers. I have no idea about spaniels.

My little boykin has been spade for over ten years now. She has no weight issue and was a fine retriever when younger.

I think at his age it would be fine.

Most of the time a dog can get aggressive towards other dogs or people if they don't mingle with other dogs or other people.
It's best to keep your dog with you a lot, when possible so it can learn some social skills.

He sleeps inside the house and is outside all day with another lab. Always good around people, but he bit a guy on the leg that was jogging 2 days ago.

I had zero social skills until my wife had my nutz cut. Only problem I have now is a tendency to sniff womens butts when I am in Victorias Secret.
