Trout fishing had been spectacular through the end of September and early October. When the last cold front approached the speckled trout were not easy to catch. The fish were in the middle of their transition to the interior marshes of lower Dularge. The sudden drop in water temperature of 10? and the increased wind activity had put the trout on the scatter. Towards the end of last week however they seemed to have re-emerged into the traditional post front fall pattern. This weekend we found schools of tightly packed speckled trout chasing the plethora of shrimp in the main bayous leading from the lakes into the marsh. Although the bird activity has somewhat dwindled, speckled trout can be found easily by reading the water and looking for anything that seems out of place such as nervous water, flicks of baitfish, and current lines. When we do find birds we are catching trout with double rigged Matrix Shad Shrimp Creole, Glow, Lemonhead and Ultraviolet. Corks have been producing trout as well with the same colors.
The redfish activity continues in the larger bayous of dularge producing great catches of big bull reds up to 40 inches. Those are being caught on bait crabs.
I suspect that after these cold fronts this week the bigger trout will begin to stack up in their traditional winter time holes. With the number of trout we saw in September we should have a great winter fishery!
