Yep...cut it down some, should still be able to get boat under it. Then use fastgrass as a good base, then fill in holes. |

Where are you located and have you hunted this area before? IMO, it is not practical to set blinds on new marsh for atleast a one season. It will take you one or more seasons to figure out water levels and flight patterns. Stay mobile the first season, hunt the existing grass/cane and you should get an idea of where the birds want to be and then put blinds in. We have a monstrocity that will probably be cut down this year since it is too big and not productive.

It's our first season in this area but our family member is set up about 800 yards away and put us in this place. We're set up in the mouth of a slough that connects with the lake on an eastern bank. We've talked to two people who hunt near the location and told us it would be a perfect place. I know putting trust in someone like that isn't a great thing but from what I saw during teal season we're gonna be ok. Woodies like nuts and a small number of big ducks buzzed the area.
ETA: this isn't marsh, its freshwater, thats why I wanted to know what these plants were gonna do with the winter. I know everything in the marsh pretty much dies, never hunted fresh. |

I agree with Raymond, hunt out of the grass or a boat blind for the first season.
Try to scout the flight patterns on different winds, sometimes 10 -15 yards on blind location can make a big difference. To me, small and inconspicuous is better. |

I agree with everyone else. U need to cut it down. Unless u wanna spend a week brushing it. Then u will have to re-brush it prior to every hunt.

I had a boat blind I was getting rid of. Think numbnuts has it just sitting in his back yard. |

If you still want to get rid of it let me know, I'm afraid of heights. May end up needing it

Ok, to answer you question yes, the cattails will die this winter. You will be left out to dry like towels on a laundry line!

also the roseau cane in the back will die in late winter and start to look a bit thin by midseason.

I never knew that marsh was only saltwater.

Did you know lakes aren't marshes?

my uncle recently brushed our blind with fast grass.....I still think ours is still a little too tall. Lucky for us we have willow trees behind us about 15 yards which helps to blend in our blind with the back drop. Also, for youth season on NOV 5th I will be taking my 11 year old. If anyone has kid that would like to hunt let me know. I may have room for one. Our lease is about 7-8 miles Southwest of Suires grocery which is South of Kaplan.

1 foot is perfect. Actually a little too deep. 6" or less. Ducks love to walk around without gettin their butt wet.

yes I like just enough to keep the de ks floating. Too deep of brings in the trashy diving ducks.
