if you see someones boat or houseboat floating away try to secure it and not just take a picture.

NOT always a good idea-especially these days. A boat is one thing-but a houseboat?...nope. I've seen random acts of kindness go bad.

very true, get you arse shot off because you try to tie off a loose boat but to others it looks like your trying to steal it with ropes hooked to your boat

in bad weather or conditions that could tear it up, yes I would tie on and drag it to a safe shoreline to tie it off at but in most cases it wont go that far on its own from where you report it to be and so isn't worth risking a bad misunderstanding possibly leading to violence.
