The new coil will be rated for the new compressors/condensing units.
If you change out the outside unit, you will have to change out the inside coil also. But you can change out the inside coil and nothing else, if that is what you want to do. The outside unit is what costs so much to run. I wouldn't worry about it till you need to change it out. However, none of these components will ever go down in price. If you get them both now, it might save you money over getting it later. Also, if you do a complete change out, it is normally a lil cheaper to do when it is cooler and there is a lot more competition for work. It is a lot slower when it cools down. When it is hot like now, everyone is booked up with calls. To change out the unit, you might pay a premium price. |

19 years old? Change the entire system. You'll probably save the difference in cost within just a couple of years.

Agree on changing the whole unit. Just did it in March. Went with a Trane XL20 with two compressors (2Ton and 4Ton). Didn't know how much more efficent the new unit is until I got the electric bill in for July. From last year to this year spent right at $125 less and that is with the temperature set at 70 at night instead of 75 like last year.

Change it all out. I changed out my 15 year old unit last fall. My highest bill last summer was $290, this summer the highest bill was $185 and we even keep the house cooler this year. It may be more money to change it all, but you'll save in the long run!

I agree with all the statements about about the cheaper bill with a whole new system. They make them so much more efficient now. I have 3 central units at the crib and that meter ain't skeered to spin, need all the help I can get. 2 of my 3 or new units.

Thanks for all the help. Also why not a Carrier??. That's what I presently have. I have a gas furnace interconnected with the A/C unit, which is still in excellent shape according to the tech. Got bids on Carrier A/C replacement and retaining the heat portion. Also got bids on a Trane but tech said I'd have to replace furnace also if I Went with Trane--way more expensive to replace. So therefore it looks like I'll need to stick with Carrier

You can change just the outside unit and the inside coil and keep the heater.
If they say they cannot do that, it's bull crap. The new outside units need a new coil. They won't warranty it if you don't change the inside coil. The heater is the heater. Only reason to change it is if it is gas and the heat exchanger is busted or leaks. Carrier is not that bad, but it will cost a lot more. |
