Default Crabbing questions

Never fooled with crabbing much other than a string and dip net a long time ago.
But fishing the rollover/Rockefeller area last week I saw a ton of crabs, large crabs, swimming around.
Is the best way to get me to just hang crab nets off the boat, pilings on the weirs, or what?

Default Crabbing questions

We get up on the weirs and tie line to chicken quarters or legs, and beef melt. Sometimes they want chicken, sometimes they want melt. Pull slow slow and scoop them with the dip net.

I've never used nets, but see people with them every now and then. They take up more space and are more maintenance, a spool of twine and a bucket are very simple, and chances are you have a net on hand if you're out there fishing anyway.

Definitely check the limits wherever you are, some places will allow standard state limits of 12 dozen while others will only allow 5 dozen (Sabine). These limits are per boat/vehicle.

Now is a great time, you can eat like a king soaking lines for a couple hours for crabs and get a couple of reds there for the grill.

Can definitely just use the twine and meat. A buddy and I one time got hi-tech and used our graphite rods and braid. LOL.

We noticed all the crabs had been removed from the base of the pier so we needed a little more reach. added an egg sinker to the chicken to get it below the seaguls reach. We'd just slowly reel them in until they were over the net. Caught some over 20 feet from the pier... It was a hoot. Crabbin is just a good time and great way to spend time with kids or friends and have a drink or 2 and boil them up.

have fun.

Does anyone have any tips for crabbing off a boat with string and a net. Do you let the meat hit the bottom or do you just throw the meat off the side.

Default Have seen people

throwing cast nets as well at the weirs. Wouldn't that be tough to get the crabs outta that contraption?

Cast net is not the preferred method of catching crabs. They are not east to get out of that mess.

Default What's the consensus

best spot for crabbing without a boat? Don't feel like dragging my bayboat a long distance just to crab. I've heard good things about Rockefeller. Also wondering if you need a fishing license as an adult to use string or drop nets. Wife may want to tag along!

On a refuge you need a license. Only crabbed once and it was at the rock for the 2014 SC tourney. Caught about five dozen. Warden was checking everyone for license at the ramp when we left. He never asked to see anything but license which I was shocked about. Up here they want to know everything maybe even your mother's maiden name and possibly a urine sample. From both in some cases.lmao

Yes, you will need a license. Stop at Billy's in PI and tell them you just want a license to crab and they will sell you what I think is called a line license for like $5. But if you already have a saltwater fishing license then you are good to go.
