Eek Lionfish in the GOM

New reports out showing what was inevitable = the exotic lionfish has been spotted in the GOM. Bad bad invasive species that is a voracious predator on coral reefs. They are supposedly very good to eat, but their spines will do some damage to you

For those that are hazy on their lionfish identification, for the younger crowd they are the fish that Deuce Bigalow was trying to replace in Antoine's aquarium and for the slightly older they are the fish that Leslie Neilson stabbed with a pencil in the Naked Gun

Have been seeing the Asian carp in the MS River oxbows for several years now as well as the Oua****a and Boeuf Rivers. They are pretty large fish and would hurt pretty bad if they hit you when going wide open. Seen where one guy started a business with them by using them for cat food. That guy is a genius! Much better than feeding a silly cat tuna

we saw quite a few in Jamaica a few months back. We actually ate some for lunch one day. Not to shabby. There was a guy from the peace corpse. doing some studies on them there. He said they multiply like rabbits, and can eat about 30 baby fish in an hour. They have really no known predator, but they are training the local fisherman how to handle them and to eat em. Claimed it all started with someone letting some go from an aquarium.

look in the past couple issues of TIDE magazine and there was a great article on Lion Fish. Absolutely NO natural predators in US waters.

Default they are tasty

they were very good, but not a whole lot of meat on the filet. according to that peace corp guy, the only known predator that eats them is grouper. maybe we could start putting them in the bait stands for grouper bait. ha-ha.

The divers over here in Florida are including them in tournaments and are asked to kill as many as possible and to report their kills to FFWC.
