Thanks fellas. The green speculum on the wing was throwing me off. Have only killed mottleds with mostly blue. I've called it in and am currently waiting for paperwork.

Nice kill congratulations. Every time I shoot a Mottled Duck I think it will have a band on it, but it has not happened to me yet. Where did you get him? Please post the band results when you get them. He was more than likely banded not far from where you got him...

Mottled duck for sure.. Most mottled ducks "I'm told" stay pretty local. Killed 2 banded mottled birds in Grand Cheniere and both were banded there FYI. So there must be some truth to them staying local.

Congrats. Definitely a drake Mottled duck. I killed one at Sabine Refuge that was banded in Port Acres, TX. It seems they move up the gulf coast during the winter. And possibly down.

They are local birds. Their wintering vs breeding habitat use may differ, but they don't migrate in the way that other waterfowl do. Similar to wood ducks really, although there is a migratory population of wood ducks.

Yeah that one has a little Mexican duck in it.

They got mottleds up along the east coast. Buddy was a game warden way back and said LDWF would trade our mottled ducks to other states for other critters and thats how some of them got there

**** ain't true. There aren't any mottled ducks off the Gulf coast. There is the west Gulf Coast population, and the Florida population. That's it. If this crap was true, it must be a giant cover-up. And if that is true, what the hell did Louisiana get out of the deal?

We traded the East Coasters Mottled ducks for nutria, we sent a bunch of coonasses up their and trapped all of the nutria for alligator food when the alligator population was very low around the 40's.
