Default fly fishing

I'm thinking about getting into fly fishing and I have no clue where to start. I guess my questions are where is a good place to find fly fishing equipment, how much should I expect to spend on a starter rod and reel, and where can I find tips and pointers to learn how to fly fish. I'm from Houma and mainly want to learn fly fishing to catch reds when I'm not chasing specks. Any help and info will be greatly appreciated. thanks

You can also pm Outcast. Him and Lucas are both great people.

I had the pleasure of fly fishing with both of them on the same trip. It was a great time with good people. I learned a lot from both of them!

Cabelas is a pretty good place too start they have a few combo's you might be able to use I wouldn't spend too much on the first , rod you might not like it Spend a little time observing . There are a few vids on you tube that might be helpful

go to the Orvis store in Perkins Rowe in Baton Rouge, don't forget to bring your life's savings and and never mind the prices, just go on a buying spree! believe me it will be fun. Just kidding! they have nice stuff, but fly fishing aint cheap!

I went to Orvis last year shopping for a fly rod and reel combo. First thing the guy showed me was $1000.00 (ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS)!!
I ask him didn't he think that was a little MUCH for a beginner?
Watch eBay ~ I
Bought an 8wt and 5wt combo slightly used at a bargain price last year.

Thanks everyone for the tips and info. I am not ready to pull the trigger on a fly rod set-up just yet, but I have 3 weeks left on my current hitch so I have plenty of time to do some more research. Thanks again.

For a good setup your going to spend around 400 bucks. 200ish for a rod,120ish for a reel, and 40-80 for fly line. PM Medheavy he sells the best fly rod you will find for the money. Comes with a extra tip and a case.

You can get a perfectly good Pfleguer combo from Cabelas or Bass Pro for pretty cheap. Don't break the bank just yet. Learn how to cast and fish in small ponds for bream. Bream on a popping bug is a ton of fun and I would bet University Lakes or some other local lakes are full of fish to keep you busy
