I went to all 3 local shops a couple months ago looking to buy a new bow.
First shop on Common St.......man there was ok, but not real helpful in explaining information about bows. Kind of like....here it is, and no sale pitch. I would have liked him to tell me more about the bows. He only showed me one bow in the type I was looking for. Second shop......on Prien Lake rd.......man was busy so it took a little while to wait on me. He only had one bow that was close to what I was looking for. Shot the bow a few times after he lowered the draw weight. It felt fairly good when shooting. Third shop in Sulphur.......near Walmart......again man was busy (?) and took a while to wait on me. He showed me one bow and I shot it a few times. I did not find the bow to have a smooth draw like the bow at the second shop. A week later.....after doing some research on bows, I went back to the second shop to ask if he had a different bow in stock that I liked what I had read about. Said no, but he has some on order that should be in any day. Finally after a month and stopping by his shop a couple of time, this other bow came in, I liked it and I bought it. He installed the sights, rest and tuned the bow ect. while I watched. I then shot the bow a few times to set the peep sight close to where it should be. |

Do yourself a favor and go to Precision Archery in Bridge City... They carry most of the big Manufacturers there (Mathews, Bowtech, etc) and they have an indoor range... they are VERY knowledgeable and they don't discriminate based on which bow you shoot or how much money you have. Very nice people there.

I bought my son a bow at Walhangers in Derrider (it is just south of Deridder on HWY 171 on the southbound side). They were nice enough folks and seemed pretty helpful.

I purchased my bow a few years ago from the shop on Common Street, because I was in the market for a bowtech at the time. However since then I have always brought mine in to Mr. Danny @ Outdoor Specialties on Prien Lake Rd. I was having problems with my peep staying true when I drew back, They never could get it right at my original shop. I brought it to Danny and he made a bunch of little adjustments and had it shooting better than ever. Since then any changes or equipment I change to change I always go to him.
He won't try to sell you on the most expensive or latest and greatest, he will give you his opinion on all products and really help you find what is the best for you. I would highly recommend checking him out, He is very busy this time of year so be ready for that. A bow shop that is very busy at this time of year should tell you something about his reputation. lol |

Jay James in Eunice (La 13 about 4 miles north of 190) makes custom bow strings and sets them up for you. High quality strings and a very knowledgeable technician. I was very satisfied with his work.

I do want to point out that Danny Whittaker at Outdoor Specialties is the best in this area from my experience the past 7+ years of bowhunting. I bought my Mathews bow and ALL of my accessories, arrows, everything from him and was a regular at his shop for several years.
My only complaint is because he doesn't look too kindly on doing work or adding components that you did not purchase from his shop. IMHO that means it's more about the money than it is about the Archery for him. I was GIVEN a free set of strings to try out by a guy and I went to Danny to get them put on my bow because that is where I went for everything... I was never treated the same after that incident and that was the reason I decided to switch shops. Donny at Precision Archery sells everything, works on everything, and just seems to want to get you set up correctly... doesn't seem like it's all about the money. I'd rather do business with a guy like that. |
