Default Brake trouble

Mods, im not sure if this is in the right spot, if not, move it please.

I have a 1997 chevy 1/2 ton 1500 P/U.

Went to get the oil changed about 4 days ago, the guy put new brake fluid in the reservior, cause he said it was a little low.

Problem: When I push the brakes, I have to pretty much stomp them to the floor to stop. It sounds like an air leak coming from inside the cab.... just a constant psssssssssssssssssssssssssssshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. When I finally get stopped, the truck starts sputtering like it wants to die out.

What I've done: Looked at the reservior to make sure there is still fluid and also made sure the cap was on right along with the seal.

My Question: Is there air in the lines ??

I need to get this fixed....

the big drum looking thingy (probably black)that the "reservoir" is bolted to is the culprit.......There is a vacuum line that runs to it.........check it. If your looing vacuum, your truck will run funny and it'll make that sound when on the brakes..........If not the line, its broke........They arent expensive and are easy to change.......

Sounds like it's the brake power booster. I had a 98 that did the same thing.

Air in the brake lines won't make your truck engine sputter. Got to be a vacuum leak. Check any hoses coming off the master cylinder drum. The "big black thingy" as Dink calls it!

btw.........you'll need a 2nd person to help with brakes, so you might as well get them to step on the brakes & see if you can locate where the "psssssssssssssssssssssssssssshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh hh" sound is coming from!

Yep, I had a 97 about 2 years ago did the same thing, the symptoms sound exactly the same.

Note: I changed it myself and it was not fun.
