Default Double Duty Tactical

I'm going to buy a tactical gun (AK, AR type) and want some advice on what would be best for doubling as a defense and deer/hog weapon?

Keep the post relative to the question - recommendations on proper deer rifles and high powered scopes aren't necessary. My hunting areas don't require long shots.

Thanks for the feedback fellas.

If you are going to hunt deer and hog with it then for sure get it in .308.

I'm new to them, but have gathered that AR is most common in .308 and .223 with a broad range of other calibers. The AK is pretty much 7.62mm. I could be way off though

.308 is top of my list, but want to see what other opinions and experiences are out there.

Ammo availability is also a factor, I don't want anything I can't readily get at the local shops and big stores.

I would also much rather an american weapon, so I guess the AK is a non contender?

another AR round that is becoming popular is .300 blackout, it's good for both. the .223 round has came a long way, winchester and barnes both make a round that will knock a deer or hog down very well, there solid copper controlled expansion hollow points that keep there weight and double in width upon impact. I planned on hunting with my ar15 but used a .444 instead!

How hard is that .300 blackout to get ahold of and what are the prices compared to .308 and .223?

The net has blocks on all firearm related sites where I'm at... So I can do zero research for a bit!

I like it... Which gun manufacturer? Or is there someone local that is reputable builder for a better price? Or could I put my own together?

I wouldn't want to tackle is piece by piece at this stage, but could handle ordering a complete lower and build from there.

DPMS in .308, .260 Rem, or 6.5 creedmore is gonna handle all the hogs you can throw at it..and be able to get out there if you want to use it for deer

I've had one and had problem after problem with it, cheaper parts. but after learning, I should of kept it and fixed the very inexpensive problems, all makers have a product that varies batch by batch but they all have quality control too. I'd buy another DPMS if I could find one for a good price. right now I'm looking at a rra operator I might buy one monday.

I see a .300 Ultra mag and .338 federal, that ultra mag has some serious energy at nearly 4,000 ft/lbf and the .338 around 3,200 ft/lbf... Am I wandering off the path with these two rounds? Are they TOO fast at 2,500-3,000 fps and above for CQ?

I'll save the battle rifle rounds for the next one!

All good recommendations, I'll post pics when I get something in hand.

With the amount of configurations and potential uses I can see I will end up with a few AR's before the bug is done biting me........................

I've got some really nice AR's for sale in .223. They are made by CMMG. Just shot my personal one for the first time this weekend. Drop me a line if you are interested.

I've got a .223 DPMS, and I love it. It's FUN to shoot. No problems with it so far...
