Default Hill Country Hunt

Had a good 2 days in junction Texas
Got a good axis and my best deer to date on this property.
It's only a small plot 80 -90 acres
surrounded by hunting leases. These deer in the hill country just don't get big nice racks but 150lb deer is big.
Most deer don't get much of chance to get too big and a lot get hit by cars.
He ain't the biggest but it was a cool set up. Nice spot and stalk in a creek bottom dropped like a rock.

Good deer man! Even better story of how it came together... Hope them axis play nicer after thanksgiving. Can't believe you didn't see more that you did.

Are Axis native to the area?

If not does that mean you can hunt them year round?

They are not native and considered invasive. You can hunt them year around and spot light them on your own property.

Default Hill Country Hunt

Nice axis. I killed a big one a few years ago in Sonora on my uncle's place. I just got in the lease with him this year mainly for the spring turkey hunting. Covered with turkeys. Place just doesn't hold really BIG whitetails. Guess cause of the hill country. Plenty of bucks just nothing really bigger than 110-120". Maybe they are just shooting too many young ones. I got a better chance of shooting a 130+" buck at my place in St Francisville during the rut without having to make that 10 hour ride. I might make one trip this deer season. The exotics are what make it exciting to hunt.

Yeah they just don't get big over there. Gotta feed heavy protein to get them big. You will get big wide racks tall tines but just no mass what so ever.
This axis was a baby compared to the one I shot when I was 19.
36.5" tall
23" inside
Didn't weigh it but was prolly 220ish.
I will post a pic of the mount this eve.

Default Hill Country Hunt

Dang 36.5" is a beast. Mine was only 30" but was the most massive axis I've ever seen. Shot him out the back of that pickup in the back ground at about 400 yards in May 2011.

Doesn't do it any justice.
The wife won't let me hang it till we get a bigger place and it can be far away from her.
