Bay boat info
Usally not till you get in a wreck
Just depends on the weight of the boat and how she sits on the trailer, and they are required by law Last edited by ChrisD; 09-19-2015 at 08:19 AM. Reason: change |

Yes, they are required and they might keep your boat out of the bed of your truck if you are in a accident.

They also keep it from bouncing on rougher roads and that helps your a equipment a little.
Last week I forgot to latch the bow eye on the trailer.. glad I used the transom tiedowns that day. Sure, I know... happens to the best of us. |

USE THEM
I have been behind a 30+ foot offshore boat and watched it come 5 inches off of the bunks going down Hwy 90 |

Well I guess ill have to start using them. I haven't in the past. I only had a bay boat for about 7 months and don't tow it far most of the time. My old boat, a small express bass boat, I used them but this but I didn't think I needed them on my larger heavier Bluewave.

Most trailer bunks can rotate 45 degrees if you hit a bump and the back end is not tied down. Bad idea coming down on the edge of the bunk. Happened on my Blackjack. Just lucky could put in the water and fix the bunk.

Highway 90 is the worse. I've lost more trailer parts on that road!!! (IE: lights, even lost my trailer light wire)

Why wouldn't you use a tie down? I see this question asked all the time and I simply don't get it. I have towed a just a few boats in my life and I have never towed one without a tie down strap for the transom.

Thats my question..... it takes 2 minutes to get them on or off. You are also required to have a tie down on the bow going from the bow eye straight down on a 90 degree anlge to the trailer to prevent the bow from lifting up |

Caught On Camera: Boat Trailer Collides With Truck In Fort Smith
http://5newsonline.com/2015/10/09/ca...in-fort-smith/ Not sure if I posted this video correctly, never posted pictures or videos before. Anyway if it did post correctly, Not sure if tie downs would have helped the boat in this video. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

Tie down AND chains are both a good idea

Make sure to connect the end to the metal frame of the trailer. Pick up my new boat a few years ago, notice the service tech. had install the trailer end of the tie down to a pad eye lag screw. The pad eye lag screw was screwed into the running board.... Not a smart ideas....as these great Louisiana roads, will cause the boat with running board to separate from the metal frame of the trailer.

I cannot use tie downs personally because of my trim tabs and swim platform, they get in the way

Maybe a tie down strap across the transom end would work.

My problem was trim tabs. I drilled a hole in my trailer frame to attach tie downs. They are on an angle, but it's better than none

HWY 90 is terrible and so is the overpasses on I10 from lafayette to Henderson. I've had more flat tires on that stretch of road than anywhere else, I HATE those overpasses
