Exclamation Where is Money Needed in LA

Where do you guys think the WL&F should spend our tax money?

On erosion?
Re building marshes?
Fish Studies?
New Reefs to protect from storms?

Do we need to give more Tax Money to the WL&F?

I think we need to raise out of state fishing license to about $500 year
And hunting to $1000....

And if you are a out of State guide and take customers to LA to guide them you should have to Pay LA $5000 guide fee....

i normally try not to get involved in any discussions that are controversial but I have to chime in on this one. Why would you want to raise the price of the licenses for out of state sportsmen? That would take away from the amount of money brought into the state since those out of state people spend a lot of money on other things while they are here. Louisiana attracts a lot of people and the more the merrier.

Oh and as far as tax dollars spent by Lf&W I think they should invest in educating the public. This state and the country for that matter has no idea the repercussions that the loss of our wetlands means to us and them. I think with better education would come more dollars sent to this state to "fix" some of the issues we face.

I disagree, this is one of the best places to fish and people would pay a little extra to be able to fish here....I would spend it on erosion

Glad I got my life time hunting and fishing license when they first came out.
It already paid for itself.

If you fix erosion, you fix marshes. That should be lumped into one.

I don't think LDWF should be responsible for fixing what the Feds did when
they dredged the ship channel and what the oil companies did when they dig
canals and ditches.
It took years, but now if you dig do anything to affect wetlands, you have to
have an approved mitigation plan. You damage 1 acre of wetlands, you have
to improve 2 acres somewhere else as a mitigation plan.
LDWF had no say so in letting anyone dredge or dig on private or public lands,
why should they have to foot the bill for what the State and Feds approved?

Just my opinion.

these two go hand in hand.

I would like to see WL&F stop hemorrhaging money on pointless projects AND PEOPLE.

As for raising the license fee, thats absurd, it cost me 41 dollars a year to fish in florida all i want to.

what people forget is that fisheries are a blessing not a right. We dont own those fish just because we live in louisiana, everyone in this nation has a right to what we have a right to.

thats a very very minimum rate. you are right wildlife and fisheries's main concern is not coastal loss, but with coastal erosion you loose habitat, so they must be involved, but NO they should not foot the bill.

I had to pay for mitigation in the late 80's. It was 2 for 1.
They would not let me do it, I had to pay a certified contractor.
I wanted to make wetlands by digging a levee around some land
and flooding it. The state said it could be pumped out, so I had
to fix up some land somewhere else. They did not let me make
the decision on where it was, they made all decisions.
I was able to find a contractor way cheaper than what the State
wanted to use.

yea, people make lots of money off the state from mitigation banks.

its stupid what the state makes you do even when you are trying to help.

Hopefully in a few years ill be up there making decisions

At one time, La. charged Texans the same it cost us to hunt in Texas.
Fishing might be different. But I remember that it cost my friends from Ga.
less to hunt ducks than it did my friends from Tx., in the same year.
This was in the 90's.

Thank you W.
Texas wants to charge a prime rate for us to make a hunt over there.
So they should have to pay the same to fish over here.
We have to buy a year license just to hunt one day.

When I first started hunting deer in Tx., it was $75.
When I quit hunting deer in Tx., it was $200.

Smokin Educational stuff...right up my alley

as stated above...

Louisiana's coast is basically 95% marshes (not exact, im not a google pro.) The coast aka marshes are eroding, and only way to fix that would be to "re build the marshes". In a early thread, we said pumping sediment back into the marshes, will basically "re-build them." Bosshog mentioned that the sediment pumped in the marsh is going to basically be a big mud flat. IDK how many plants would be able to grow on that Mud flat (yak-em could tell ya) but from what i've learned from my classes, sooner plants grow the better the soil will stay in-tact. Making it not erode as fast.

SOO basically, unless you want your home/camp on Biglake being apart of the gulf of mehico, they need to spend the money on restoring marshes, not only by pumping sediment back, but also replanting. Thankfully I don't pay taxes yet

I think all that makes sense...??

Federal dollars are needed to fund these projects along with the cooperation of the Corp of Engineers. Unfortunately, they hold most of the cards when it comes to projects like these. Rebuilding the marshes are a good idea the problem lies in the fact that there needs to be a replenishing of organics from natural river flooding. This has been virtually eliminated thanks to the afore mentioned Corp of Engineers. Barrier islands are another critical improvement needed to be made so we have protection from the plethora of hurricanes we are getting as of late. Yak'em and I are working as hard as we can to develop genetically diverse plants to rebuild the marshes but we can only go so far without monetary help. This is not just my opinion these are all facts.

Ok guys get ready. I will agree With W on charging out of state fisherman and hunters the same as they charge us. If Texans come fish with a guide the licsenes is a couple of dollars and this is BS. Now this year they did go up on out of state hunting license. IMO if you want to go out of state pay for it, its your choice. I hunt out of state and I pay for it and dont agree with the cost but I still go. Just my 2 cents

AMEN... One Trip to Junction Tx for one week hunt cost me at least $2000.....in fees and tags....your reg and exotic...are sep... You can also buy tags if needed

But for a fishing guide to come to LA and bring his customers to fish our LA tax water should cost him (the guide) $5000 off the bat.....and at least $300 per fisherman per year....Give back to us.....
