Default Dog Training Tip #2

Hold is a conditioned command taught to make sure the dog understands he is supposed to hold the bumper, dowel, duck, until you ask him to release said object. Dogs that are taught hold will be less likely to mouth or chomp objects that are retrieved (a more popular definition is Hard Mouth). Only after your dog will walk at heel with a bumper or dowel in his mouth are they ready for force fetch. Hold will give them the tools to complete force fetch by holding onto the bumper after the command Fetch. It can be a slow process but IMO it is your foundation for the training that follows.

When did we start getting training tips? I could have used this one a month ago. Nice Raymond.

By far the most frustrating part of training but probably the most important.

Have 4 about the same age and figured I would do a play by play with them. I had a sloppy mouth dog once and swore it would never happen again!!! You only get one chance on hold so ya better get it right cause it can't be fixed after the fact. Ya should have called me, I am a specialists when it comes to hold and force fetch.

I have often thought about getting some "shock underwear" for my boy. Would love to be able to turn up the heat on him when he is not listening.

Hold should be firm enough that you physically move dog pulling on bumper/dowel when holding it. Remember collar condition? Every step in the program is mandatory or you don't have a program only a cluster muck.

That makes two of us. That would be really nice when he's acting up in a store!

FF is not just about creating good mouth habits, but it works wonders on gettin your dog to understand pressure and how to turn it off through compliance. Keep the tips comin! And would love a gun dog forum, dealing with the way we hunt our retrievers in south LA.

Not sure about that idea at this time, lets see how this plays out and go from there. Think more peeps may look if it's in the main hunting forum because this place gets scarce spring/summer.

You should see one of my yella dogs, he has a motor.
