Default 10-4-12 late report

I went to Big Lake on Wed. of this past week.

I got there about 7:30 AM and the winds were 8-10 mph out of the NE. the Calcasieu Pt. landing already had 20 "trailer" in the parking lot.

When I got to Turners, there were a dozen boats......all fishing around scattered gulls that were "picking". In 45 minutes, I only caught 1 speck using soft plastics and only saw 1 or 2 boats catch anything.

I headed south and saw 2 boats working some birds. I stopped at a group of gulls sitting on the water. Nothing there after a dozen cast. When I look back from where I had just come from....there was a big flock of birds feeding just a 1/4 mile away. Another boat approached from the north as i trolled up. I caught another speck there.

The water in Turners and just south of the Well-heads was fairly clear with about 12"+ visability. The winds were picking up a little [~10+ mph].

I road farther down the east bank and stopped at the first wier. Water was pouring out into the lake. A boat up by the weir caught a sheephead with shrimp. I did not get any bites using a Char. Gulp swimming mullet so I left after a few minutes.

My Wife said she wanted some fresh stuff flounder so I tried fishing the Grand Bayou marsh. I have never seen so many boats cast netting...there must have been 30+ boat catching shrimp. I talked to several people and said they were only catching a few per throw. I never got the cast net out.

After 15 minutes of throwing the Gulp I caught a 12" flounder.....not really big enough to stuff. Fished another "flounder" spot with no bites. I went on down the bank a ways, still with no bites. Then I thought, if nothing is along the bank.....maybe out in the middle of the bayou. Second cast I caught a 14" speck. Then a few more cast and I got another speck along with a couple dinks.

Back to trying for bigger flounder. I finally hooked into a nice size one....mission completed.

I left the marsh and headed west to see if I could find some more trout. the wind was now more like 12-14 mph. I tried the old tank battery using the Slimy Slug but nothing feed there.

When I first got out on the lake there was a little falling tide but that stopped by 8:30 AM. By late afternoon the water stared to move out some.

I headed to Long Pt. where I had caught some trout on my last trip. I stopped at a flock of birds before I got there and caught a couple more trout.

At Long Pt. there were more birds feeding and sitting on the water. There were trout there but not a consistent bite. I kept moving around and picking up more trout until I had my limit. None were big, most were 14-15" fish.

I tried some Topwater but never got a blowup so I mainly used soft plastic like in the picture.

Boat is great. I still need one more outing to complete the 10 hours of engine break-in running. I figured I did ~2 running on this trip with some fishing in between.

Less running with more fishing and I would have finished a little sooner. Two weeks ago I did good with topwater, this trip....none.
