Default 50 hp Tohatsu TLDI

Good morning
looking at buying one of theses motors. Just wanted some input from people who have them on how they run. What size prop they are turning reliability and any general info like maintenance and the like.

Do a search on the site. The motors have very good reviews. I have no first hand knowledge of these motors but, I believe the general consensus is to buy the 40hp and remove the restrictor plate.

I got a 40tldi on a 16/52 alweld and i run about 33-34mph. Great hole shot and easy on the gas. I believe the power pack is the difference between the 40 and 50. I popped out the restricter plate and only gained 1-1.5 mph more. But i had planned on getting another tldi but ive heard amazing things about the 4stroke tohatsu so i think im gonna go with that

"ive heard amazing things about the 4stroke tohatsu"

Ditto that. I tested the 40/50 tohatsu 4 stroke, now I own one. I run it on a 1556, .100 gauge Ambush hull. The boat weighs right at 520 pounds. With 2 large deep cycle batteries, 82# thrust motorguide, one large start battery, fishing gear, and me, boat runs right at 42 mph. Add a 150 pound man and boat runs 39-40 consistently. The water pump puts out 25+ pounds at WOT. The gear ratio is a bit different than the old 2 strokes, it's a 2.08, I turn a 16 pitch stainless prop 6000 rpm.
As for maintenance, change the oil and filter once a year, 2.5 qts. oil.
The unit weighs 209 pounds.
The biggest advantage it has over the TLDI is displacement. The TLDI is a 42 ci motor, the 4 stroke is a 52.8ci motor. Not sure how good the water system is on the TLDI, but all the old tohatsu 2 strokes sucked bad when it came to pumping water. I have fished this motor in Lacassine since it opened this year, zero problems. I am a bit hard on outboards. I have videos of this motor when we tested the 1548 Ambush. We ran several props up to a 19 pitch turbo. We also ran a few cleavers, with a 4 blade 25 pitch cleaver, we ran 54.7 mph, couldn't lift the engine high enough to run the cleaver correctly. I guess you know by now, given the choice, I would go with the 4 stroke. The 5 year warranty ain't too bad either.

I would buy the 4 stroke. We sale 20 to 1 50 fourstrokes to tldi. On most of the ones we have sold they are running a 14 pitch prop.

Must be on some heavy boats. With a 2.08 gear ratio, most of ours are running 16 pitch black Yamaha stainless props.

Pull up the schematics and you will see that the 40 and 50 have no difference. Only difference is the restrictor. Pull it and you have a 50.

I used to run 50hp cab 2 stroke nissan, it gave me 11 years of hard running with low maintance. My buddy has a 90TLDI and I'm impressed with speed and fuel economy I can't say longivity wise because it's fairly new but so far I'd put it before an ETEC

I am running the new 40/50 4 stroke on a 1648 100 gauge alweld 2 trolling batteries 1 cranking battery myself and fishing gear with a 15 pitch Yamaha black no issues so far and sips gas. With 2 people running 37 mph wish I knew what to do to get 40 out of it but its a solid motor and water pump is way better then the old mega I ran for years.
