Dad's friend went clear limbs from the tree he was in before his daughters birthday, was climbing up swinging the cane knife as he went up, swung at one, lost his balance, dropped the knife and fell 15 feet on the blade. He crawled for 20 feet before he bled out.

I bring my harness, but don't use it while climbing up or down. Big hassle especially before the sun comes up.

Hope your friend is ok

I don't use climers, just lock on's. I hated finding a good spot and not have the perfect tree to use a climer.

I have a good dad. Lol. He pulled his off his year, hiked to me, and helped me.. Meanwhile, Shawn is off in the woods a few hundred yards away, nice and cozy playing on his iphone

I used to think that way until last January. I was in Red River when the life flight helicopter showed up to rescue the dude with the broken back. Stand broke climbing up or down, not quite sure now, but that is when I decided I would no longer be untied from the tree. It really isn't that difficult to climb up and down with it attatched to the tree. Much more difficult to spend the rest of your days in a wheel chair I would think.

I'm in the med field and can attest to the fact that I've seen with my own eyes people getting killed falling from tree stands. Ruptured spleens, brain injuries, spine injuries(i.e. quadriplegia), etc. Please be careful out there it's not worth the risk by not putting on a harness.

Fell 20 ft from a loc-on, hung the stand got in it but i pulled all the slack out the ratchet strap before I began ratcheting, so there was nothing to catch. Stepped onto stand, fell, broke my pelvis. 1/2 mile from boat, no cell phone, luckily wife was there and by some stroke of god she found someone in the woods. I have a pin in my pelvis now, it sucks, I paid almost $20k outta pocket for medical bills, couldn't walk for 3 months, so wear a safety belt
