Well it could be something as simple as a low battery or a bad battery. A bad battery will read 12V or so when you measure the voltage but the voltage will decay when a load is applied such as the motor to your trim. The only way to tell is to measure the voltage while applying the load (operating the tilt/trim).

Update:
I changed battery and same issue slow trim or no trim, I hear relays opening and closing and if I tap on motor housing it'll work. I'm thinking it's time for a new trim motor. What do you guys think? I've never had trim/tilt issues on any previous outboards so this is a new one for me. Thanks for any advise! |

That is definitely another option... my whole motor was around $60 and the original one was 18 years old.... so I just replaced the whole thing

I thought about that also but I did notice some rust around the housing I will take it off this evening and see if it has rusted through and what it looks like inside. Reading forums Yamaha trim motor housing are not the best quality from what I have read. Thanks for the input!

make sure you check al the terminal connections at the relays. they get corroded and don't get good connections sometimes. also look for swollen wires indicating corrosion going on inside the wire coating
it draws the most power going up and thats when voltage issues can show up |
