Default Amberjack and Tuna Rig

Looking to purchase a new rod n reel set up for our fall snapper season trip next week.

Some of you may remember a report I posted in June where we got into some fish that our rigs could not handle. Pretty sure they were either 50+ lb ling or AJ. Whatever they were our 60lb tackle and Academy Penn combos didnt stand a chance.

I want to be prepared for whatever I hook from now on.
We may even try for some wahoo and tuna this trip.

I only offshore fish 6-10 times a year so I dont think it has to be top of the line but I dont want junk.

Could I get thia kind of setup for ~ $300?

Any recommendations?

Thanks in advance.

Thats where it's at?

Sounds like a shark rig! Ha!

If we do well we may go back the following weekend for a day trip. I'll let you know.

Yea, ive seen the charter captains do it that way.
So, the 30w would not be ideal to jig with?

Thanks for the advice.

I'd get a 600-800 shimano tekota, and a xtra xtra heavy shimano trevala rod rated for 80-200lb line. You can bottom fish with it , jig with it , I've chunked with it. A 30 or 50 w is not a level wind so jigging is a pain in the butt trying to manually level the spool .

Spool is too wide to jig efficiently. Also really heavy

My Okuma Titus Ti 80 lever drag with an Ande Tournament Saltwater ATCS-5661A 6'-6" 30-50 LB Rod has taken a few 100# class Yellowfin tuna with no problem. Spooled with 80# Power Pro braid. Complete setup was less than $250

I like to jig with spinning setups. My next one will be a saragosa 14000 or 18000 on a trevala but conventional jigging is fun with the right setup too

This setup with the 14000 is exactly what I'm using.

I like that 800 tekota. I like the 30w too but they are pricey!

You think you can pull an AJ out from under the rig with that 800 tekota?

Would you feel comfortable fishing for tuna with this reel?

Thanks for all the information.
