Reel drag

Do you release your drag after a fishing trip or leave it alone??

Back it off. It will keep the washers smoother longer. If you leave it tight to sit up for a while it can indent the drag washers causing the drag to be jerky.

My ole buddy that cleans my reels told me. First thing u do after you done fishing is back the drag down and wipe your reels down!

If u rinse your reels, tighten drag all the way down before rinsing then back it all the way off before storing.

Thanks for the tip guys, we'll pay more attention. The children do a great job rinsing the boat and reels while I clean the fish, but we never thought to loosen the drags.

yep, you gotta loosen em or they stop working smoothly and can hang up sometimes when a fish makes a quick run on you.

its especially important for lower end reels that can lose the springiness and your drag adjustment gets narrowed so if you are a light tackle fisherman it can make some reels to where you have to leave the drag looser then you like or it can cause the drag to not release in a sudden hard pull on the line

Never wash a reel with a water hose or pressure washer.
Water will get into the reel and then the bearings.
Reels have no seals to keep the water out.
Back the drags off and wipe the reel and rod with a damp
paper towel with a little simple green mixed 6 or 7 to one.
You will save money on bearings and have a smooth drag.

I mist my reels with fresh water after every trip and have not had any issues in years.

I use spinning reels. After a trip I stand all the rods up against a wall and rinse the entire rod and reel with fresh water at the same time I clean my boat. My thoughts are to rinse off all of the salt water from the rod, line and reel. I do not spray hard just a mist over every thing to rinse them.

ive never heard of this. is there a way to prove this? what exact materials are the drag made of that allows it to become indented? seems like they wouldnt use a soft material. ive never had any trouble with drag settings either. only problem i ever run into is the bearings and thats from me just being negligent. i definitely wanna know more about this!

this is new to me! Never really had trouble with drag being jerky either though.
