Has anyone had trouble with reeds before in their motors?

Not yet but I'm sure I will. If something can go wrong on something I own, it more than likely will sooner than later

What kind of problems are you having? I'm sure someone on here can help you out.

The motor is sluggish out of the hole, there is gas coming from the front of the carbs, and it dies as I come down from off plain.

You may want to run a compression check also!! Unless your running some type of fiber reeds the stocks will most likely last the life of the rings..Could be a whole host of other things causing this....year make model hours?????

CC, have you seen factory steel reeds break before?? im just curious ive seen carbon fiber ones break an split but not any factory ones...im just curious hadnt seen it before???

id like to here some more too...what are the cause's of a broken reed? besides just taking it apart what are some other diagnostics to run??

Quite a few lately, actually. Seems like in the past year, the number has jumped substantially. Don't know if it's the increase in the amount of junk running through the fuel, maybe the ethanol breaking down parts of fuel lines. Think about it, at 6000rpm, that reed is going up and down 100 times per SECOND. One little piece of grit, rubber, anything to keep it from closing flat can cause it to crack.
In the past 6 months, I have seen 8 or 10 broken STOCK reeds. Luckily, none have cause cylinder damage.

And just a side note to those that "never" run ethanol in their fuel. Do ya think there is a whole fleet of tankers just for gas with no ethanol or ya reckon they might use the same trucks for both?
jldc: There is nothing else to cause fuel to spew from the carbs, either a stuck float overflowing the fuel into the motor or a broken reed. With a stuck float, you can see the carb overflowing. The poor idle is cause by starving that cylinder for fuel, which will eventually cause more damage, no fuel=no oil=no lubrication=big repair bills.

Back in the fast boat days, we changed or at least took a peek at our reeds once a year.

Think about it, two strokes are big weedeater motors, them things have to BREATH and move gas to move oil to lubricate everything.

Boysens fiber reeds was always a great choice in my opinion and well worth the bones relative to sucking a metal reed and having a motor hand grenade on you

Every class I raced required us to re-install the reed stops. We had a maximum red stop height measurement. The only advantage to the fiber reed was preservation of the engine but, the fiber reeds were not as quick as the steel reeds. Sooo, I ran the steel reeds in my engines. Broke one reed in 10 years of racing, still finished the race. We didn't exactly run the same fuel most fishermen are using. Of course I checked the reeds after every heat and kept a box of replacements on the race trailer.

when you did your magic on my motor he thought he knew better and made it sick and i had to bring it back to you the only thing hes good for is causing trouble
