we use to catch them on the north side of the island under 210 bridge and you can catch specks there or go across the ship channel to the marker and catch crabs and flounder..... also use to go to Hog Island gully and catch them and theres reds in there

Probably right now, the farther south in the ship channel you go the better your chances of catching crabs.
In a few weeks.... crabbing should be good. |

We have done well in the canal that leads you into West Cove Bay. The ramp is on Hwy 27 south of Hackberry. We caught a falling tide and just hung nets and lines over the boat while ancored parallel to the bank. Can catch some reds in that canal too. Not sure if it would be good right now but last October we did well. When its windy you have some protection too. When we went it was 30 mph winds so no way to fish in the bay. You could go to the mouth of some of the bayous that empty into West Cove Bay along the south bank line as well. Hope this helps.

Is Hog Island Gully safe to run from the ship channel west towards La 27? My wife loves to crab and I heard this was a good area to go. On a slow fishing day in the Lake I could take her there to crab for a while till conditions maybe change in Lake.

I have not been in Hog Island Gully in several years....but yes it is safe to run in it.
Except....... about 1/2 mile from the ship channel there is a cut that goes into West Bay. Somewhere in that area there is a post [iron ???] that was used to tie up a boat when Rita came through. I don't know if this post is still there. |
