I got a nice scar on my finger from one of those lil hardheads. Found out later I should have rubbed his belly on the wound, it is supposed to have some kinda neutralizing effect. Not sure if it works, but I promise if it happens to me again I will try it.

I have caught 2 hardheads in the past 20 years, both on artificial.
One on topwater on the South end of Big Lake and the other at the Cameron Jettys, on Gulp. |

I took one about half way through my foot last year trying to step on it. I wasn't even stepping hard but it went straight through my Wolverine boot!!! It broke the fin off and once I got my foot out of my boot, I had to use pliers to pull the fin the rest of the way through my boot soul!...In short, stepping on them is a bad idea too!
Oh yeah, the next morning putting that boot on was nothing nice!!...Or the day after the next! |

Them flippers work on any kind of fish. We make them out of stainless steel tig rods. You can make 2 out of one rod.
If you don't have a flipper just hold your line up with it hanging......touch him..... he will stop moving, then slide your hand up on its back and put his back fin between your pointy and middle finger and get the hook out. Also, when i go trawling we use green rubbing alcohol after we get picked by shrimp or a catfish, burns like a mofo buts it is supposed to kill all the bacteria......also gives your hand a minty fresh smell. |

Got stuck with a mud cat thru my lacross insulated knee boots. I kicked it as hard as I could.. Couldn't walk for a week (opening week of duck season).
Still got the fin in my foot, no infections, etc. Pretty good story teller |

A Clorox pen or regular clorox out of the jug does wonder to a catfish sting. Might burn at first but it will heal a lot quicker. Also will heal your hand after getting stung with shrimp. Keep one in the tackle box all the time.

Putting your inured part under the warm pee hole of the outboard helps to ease some of the pain immediately after getting finned. Definitely use diluted Clorox ASAP to the affected area. Keep a close eye on the injured area, if the redness persists or spreads you need to seek medical attention. Hopefully no residual fin is embedded in your wound so you need to keep close tabs on it.
Vibrio is a very bad bacteria and not something anyone should take likely--I'm talking about loss of limb and possibly your life. |

I am like Ray, but about 20 years ago I caught one and had swung it in the boat. No sooner than I swung it in it fell off the hook. It's fin went thru the top of my tennis shoe and buried into the top of my foot. Major pain.
