Default What kinda of lizard is this??

I've been seeing a bunch of these big lizards in my yard lately. The one in the pictures has a green tint with an orange head. I've also been seeing some with a black body and blue stripes down its back. ImageUploadedByTapatalkHD1397838351.915598.jpg

It's not a lizard per se. It belongs to the family of newts / salamanders.

That's a skink, looks like maybe a broad-headed skink. Member of the lizard family. Funny, you normally don't see them much. They are pretty secretive critters that like leaf litter. They never stray far from cover.

Salamanders are amphibians, skinks are reptiles. Two completely different groups, and skinks are not exclusive to swamps or dark damp areas. In fact, many live in piney woods and prairies.

What he said. Lol.

Those ones with the blue tails are my favorites. Real pretty with that blue tail. There are a few species that are like that as juveniles. I don't think any retain it to adulthood though.

Its a skink. We have a ton of them around our house. They are neat little critters. We have lots of skinks, toads, and scorpions. I could do without the scorpions for sure.lol

I see quite a few around my house here in Lafayette. Mostly the black and blue ones. That one in the picture was the biggest one I've seen so far. I also have a ton of geckos that stay by by security lights at night eating bugs.
