In a disaster (katrina ) when the cell towers go down, Hams are the leading line of communication. some places they may be the only type still operating.
Allways wanted to get my license but was to dang lazy to learn the code.

Ham radio operators were big back in the Pre-'70's time.

They had setups kind of like CB radios on big time Steroids.

Morse Code is no more, only 3 classes of Licenses now, Technician, General and Extra.

Technician is an easy 50 question test, Baton Rouge is full of hams, tests are given almost every weekend somewhere in South Louisiana.

One radio the Icom 817 works worldwide with 5 WATTS, no more big and ugly, some are real small and powerful.

Its not as sexy anymore but just as potent, think of it as a well kept secret.

Here goes:

First most of our sayings and shorthands come from the days of the Telegraph when the standard was to keep the message sweet and simple, some of these abbreviations have made it into text messaging also.

FB is FINE BUSINESS (a greeting)
OM is Old Man, a reference men make to each other in the Communications world, a YL=Young Lady whereas a married woman is referred to as an XYL, hence EX YOUNG LADY.

Inhabit Leeville (Is around the area of Leeville, a small fishing village in the Southern Portion of Lafourche Parish best known for fishing and a toll bridge that goes to Fourchon)

QSO is a shorthand from telegraph days which means a contact, either over the radio or in person.

73 means Best wishes (If speaking to my XYL, I would have said 73 & 88s, which 88s means Love and kisses)

de (French Shorthand for FROM)

N5PZJ My FCC registered callsign which allows me to transmit upto 1500 Watts of Power on certain radio frequencies.

my grandpa was a ham and my uncle still is. I started to learn morse code when i was young but i got distracted by the outdoors, girls, and beer... always kinda wanted to get a license

How much you want to spend?

VHF 2 meter radios run 150-500+
HF stuff 599 to SKY is the Limit.

Modest station with all popular bands run about 1000 more or less.

What did you have in mind of spending.

Read the above post, NO CODE TEST ANYMORE, Techinician Class Test Material online and tests given almost every weekend in S. Louisiana.

Seems to be quite some activity on the radio, 10 meters opened up into Russia, seems they are having quite some time with the Forest fires, they have some California Jump teams coming in to help. Siberia is peat moss and burns when dry and hot.

Salmon Fishing runs are starting and the season is on.

BTW-we are trying to get a repeater up at Port Fourchon on 2 meters (145MHZ VHF Ham Band)
