Default Turkey Time.

It's just around the corner. I haven't chased birds in years but loved it when I did. My son wants to try it and it just happens that I was listening to one gobble behind my house this morning. Time to see if we can't put a game plan together for opening morning and put that gobbler on the ground. Collect another notch on the ole box call. Good luck and safe hunting to everyone.
When the hammer drops the gobbler flops

Heard WL&F did an extensive netting campaign in there to re-locate some birds. May not be as many as last year.

I've never hunted any wma's for turkey.
I've been lucky and taken some good beards from national forest land close to me. I still want a bird with a good set of hooks. 10 3/8" is my longest beard but he only had 3/4" spurs. Would love to have an old bird with 1"+ hooks on his legs.

Can't wait. Waiting to see if I get picked for Sherbune or West Bay. May head out this weekend to do a little listening and scouting on some of my other spots.

I know zero about turkey hunting, but if we saw some turkeys on the deer lease this year is there a good chance they are still around? Or do they move around a lot?

They should still be around. As long as there's food around, they shouldn't be far. But they can travel very far in a day but usually like to roost in the same area as long as they aren't disturbed.

Yep. During the fall/winter you'll see flocks of birds with hens and gobblers. Their concern is food. If they have it they shouldn't be far. During the early spring the flocks will seperate although the boys won't be too far from the ladies. Gota keep tabs on the ladies much like a rutting buck. It's an amazing bird to hunt but will make you feel like an idiot while you laugh at yourself. You know when you work thos mallards and tell your buddies to take em on the next pass and there is no next pass. Yeah that feeling. They seem to disappear into thin air sometimes.
I'm no expert by any stretch and don't claim to be but if anyone wants to try it this is my advice. Ignore the hunting shows that want to sell you their newest call. When you know he's coming put down the call, click off the safety gently and get your trigger finger ready. If he's coming he knows exactly where you are.

Last year, the lottery permits were mailed out in late Feb. I got mine last year on the last day of Feb.

Does anyone know if the permits are "in the mail"?

In the spring time you'll see the gobblers strutting on pipelines, logging roads, skidder trails and in hay fields. If you can find a block of pines that has had the brush burnt out and is coming back with new green growth they really love that.

spoke to the Lake Charles office, they will be mailing out the permits this week, running a little behind. Largest number of applicants ever.

They've already mailed out permits for Clear Creek and West Bay. Not sure what is left to mail.
