Default Rifle?

Thinking about buying a new deer rifle. I am currently using my dad's old Remington 700 with a wood stock and I swamp hunt so it gets banged around. I'm looking at Savage 11, Weatherby, and Remington 770. Either chambered in .270 or 30-.06. Anyone have any pros or cons towards either of these rifles? I'm looking to spend about $400. New or used?

trusty ol Marlin 30-30, can't be beat for Louisiana huntin as far as I am concerned but if I was buyin somthin else I would pic a .270 since its a flat shootin gun and I like the Savage for what you get for the money.

Got a Winchester 94 in 30-30, that gun never leaves the cabinet. Marlin got bought out if I remember right by Remington and they had some sweet little bolt actions for about $300 at Cabela's.

my Marlin is 20yrs old and has been through the ringer, its hunted all over Louisiana and Texas and has made anywhere from a 10ft-150yr shot and never had a deer run.

My Marlin is about 35 years old and has never let me down up to about 150 yds. I hunt a 7mm mag is west texas shooting from 1 hill to another though. Longest shot with it has been about 350 yds.

Only bad thing is though, I'm not fond of lever actions. My dads friend got killed when his son went to decock his lever action. Finger slipped off the hammer and had enough force to discharge the round straight into his stomach. He died in front of his son. Thats why I never take it out of the cabinet.

Nice!

My 7mm mag is a Sako. I love it, just can't shoot it here. I'd be better off shooting my Thompson Center Contender 7mm TCU around here.
