Default Captain's License

I would like to get my Captain's license. It is just something I have alway thought of doing and I would like to have the additional knowledge I would gain from the course.

I know some of you guys have already done the course work, where did you go to get it? Are there schools that teach on the weekends or are you able to do most of it from an online school?

Thanks.

If you got stuck with anything were you able to call and ask questions?

I have it all on my desktop at home

They send you everything you need for the school. You will have to get your twic card, do physical and drug screen on your dollar...my work requires all so I did not have to worry about that

I did mine online then tested in slydell. The worst part of it were the maps and nab symbols.

Thanks W, I actually looked that up last night after you told me the name. How difficult was the mapping and plotting; I have not done much of that except what I was exposed to in the military.

mapping and Plotting is not that difficult as you think....to me the hardest part is to remember all the signs and signals of navigation.

I did the whole packet and online course in about 2 weeks and that was working on it in afternoons after work and on my days off...

I got my Captain's License (Six Pack) a couple years ago through Captain Roy's Marine Training in Seabrook, Texas. I did it over the course of 3 weekends, driving over each weekend from Lake Charles. It wasn't bad at all. Easy course and if you are worried about chartplotting, they did a good job of teaching it at Captain Roy's. I didn't find anything difficult about the course or exams - it's just a matter of memorizing safety and navigation information and then spitting it back out on paper. The guys that teach there are just like everyone else here....they love to be on the water and love to feel a tug on the end of the line. The course was reasonably priced compared to other schools I looked at. Not only did they help with every step of the Coast Guard course to make sure I passed the exams, but they also helped me get squared away with the other pieces of the puzzle that i needed to become a licensed fishing guide in Louisiana. I would recommend them if you are interested in knocking your course out at a school. If they get enough people to sign up for a course in a particular area, I believe they will actually come to you instead of you having to go to them in Seabrook.
