Me and a buddy fished yesterday evening for about 3 hours. We kept 30 and threw about 25 more keepers back. Fished the birds between Texaco cut and Long Point not too far off that west bank. I don't know how its gonna be this weekend after the front, but there is a lot of shrimp in the lake right now. Weather is supposed to be nice, so I imagine there will be quite a few boats out there. If you go, good luck and hope you catch some!!!

As it get colder the birds seem to work better towards Turners Bay. On Sunday we caught under birds in the North end of West Cove and in the lake towards the East Bank.....South part of the lake. Good Luck.

SO... does anyone here think we'll have a chance to catch fish on Sunday?? Would it be worth it to go into the gulf if the bay waters are murky??
i hate my luck... |

I would stay on the north end of the lake with the north wind blowing....I doubt you will do any good in the gulf. I might be out there this weekend, not sure yet.

o don't worry. I have no shame lol I just want to catch some fish. I dont care if its croakers and sailcats. I don't know where the weirs are though. I just know somewhere on the southeast side of the lake. I hope we catch some birds in the morning and catch then. Hopefully there will only be a few people on the water cuz of the front that just passed through. I'm sure the birds will still work in the morning you know

The weirs are very easy to find.....If you launch at heberts just head south and you will see the first weir on your left a few miles down, and there are two more I belive farther south.

cool.. I'll make sure we hit them if nothing else works. We found a cut in north west cove that produces a lot of redfish and to me it should hold some flounder but haven't pulled any out yet. I just want to be able to go out and not fight the winds man. I've been off the water for 3 WEEKS!! I'm going crazy lol

There are 4 total sets of weirs on that side of the lake.
There is also one right before you get to the Old River, where it hits Big Lake. There is a big 2 story camp on pilings right next to it, just South of the Old Jetties. |

About 3 weeks ago, me and some friends got on the Flounder in the Old River, just North of Cameron.
One day they were in shallow water, to the West of the shrimp barges where the river hits the lake. Next day, they were in deeper water close to Speckdaddy's Marker 56 and heading East towards the curve where it turns North. The old yellow and white double Speck Rigs is what were were catching them on. It was right after a cold snap and the winds were 15 mph. We caught them on an incoming tide both days. |

Re: Big Lake 10-28-09 byjsmoke222000 » Thu Oct 29, 2009 12:20 pm With the forecast calling for rain & wind I would say the weirs are going to be the best bet this weekend. Live bait is always a plus. I would suggest live shrimp carolina rigged on bottom. Dead shrimp would be the next best thing. Depending on the tide & water conditions you may also want to try live finger mullet or live shad. Good luck. Be sure to post & let us know what you catch.
