Calcasieu Weire's best for Reds??

Ok.. Everybody. Was talking to a few buddy's about the Weire's at Calcasieu and they are convinced that they are the best spots for Red's.
Any other opinions out there? What about the jetties.
Also, if you know of any spot out there that's good for Specks would be appreciated.

Without doubt the jetties are the best spot for bull reds most of the year.

Slot reds move around more, so locations depend more on the time of year, salinity, bait movement, etc.

Makes sense, just those Jetties at the mouth of the Gulf are far. My issue is mostly fuel economy on my Force 75 Mercury. Last time I went to the Jetties and back to the landing I almost had to use my trolling motor to get on the trailer.
Bait movement-- you mean gulp shrimp or regular shrimp w/ carolina rig or slow reeling a plastic?

Well, my next dumb question is how the heck do you track that?
I heard that some watch the birds feeding? kinda makes sense in a way.

Knowing where the bait is can be tricky. Birds are one clue. Working shrimp boats is another. If there are shrimp boats in the channel, there is bait in the channel, otherwise, they wouldn't be working.

If you have sonar, you can learn to recognize what different kinds of bait look like on your sonar, but it takes experience. For many years in Colorado reservoirs, we ignored the fish on the sonar and focused on keeping our lures at depths and locations where there was bait. It was very effective.

At the jetties, the sonar tells me that there are bait and fish everywhere, so I usually just put baits out and wait for the bulls.

They are good for sure. Lots of good areas in BL for reds. As summer heats up they'll be some upper end slots in the open water as well. I know the guys as HRG get on them for sure.

Is the boat launch on west side of ship channel next to ferry still closed ?

It was closed last Friday when I passed.

Man that sucks. Now I have to cross the ferry to launch my boat. Any clue as to why it's closed ?

The ferry is closed because they are using a spare ferry and it has to dock close to the launch creating a possible safety hazard. The spare is side loading and the other ferry is end loading so it has to have a seperate dock. They are not sure when it will reopen, only if and when the other ferry is fixed.
