After reading the report last night about muddy water at Holly Beach Wednesday afternoon, I checked the wind readings and it was steady from the south and about 10 mph. I figured the Beach water would stay muddy until the winds changes so changed my plans to go wading on the beach.

I was at Hebert’s landing before daylight and headed south. Ran into some birds feeding along the east bank and caught one small trout on glow/char sand ell and switched to top water [bone color spook].

I got several blowups but no takers before the birds and fish left the area. I stayed a while, thinking the action would pick back up without success. Water along the east bank is fairly clear…. With a green color and the wind was about 5 -7 mph from the east. It amazed me how many other boats were out on a Thursday morning. Some areas were crowed with boats.

I found a couple more flocks of birds feeding farther south and the water remained about the same. I caught several small trout and had a couple of big blowups.

I fished some reefs along the south bank, but only caught a couple of keepers and a few barely 12 inchers…..which I released to grow some more. A couple of hours after daylight, the birds were gone. The water was somewhat clearer [~6”+ visibility] along the south bank than it was last week when I could only see 3” or 4” down in the water.

After not getting any hits on Top water and have problems with the trolling motor cutting off and then starting again, I went to see if I could catch some shrimp in the marsh. I caught just a few shrimp and other bait fish, so I headed back to fish along the east bank with live bait. I caught a couple nice specks and a redfish along the bank. By mid morning the winds had changed to blowing from the south at ~ 8-10 mph. by 10 AM and about half of the boats had left the east bank area.

I finished the day with 7 specks and 1 red in the ice chest.

When you say you went into the marsh to catch some shrimp, where did you go....behind the weirs?

I went through Grand Bayou wier.

While castnetting...... There were 2 boats nearby that were crabbing. Looked like they were keeping cabs that I throw back.

Here is a picture of the neighbor's boy..... he was my helper 2 weeks ago when we had a boil.

That's the biggest damn crab I have ever seen!

I don't have much experience on Big Lake; can you get behind the weirs in a bay boat?

Call this number......337 598-2219 to get information from the Sabine folks.

If memory is correct....... I think I have seen it posted that the bay is ten (10) feet wide.... 120 inches.

It is big enough for most bay boats.... but it is tight. The local fiberglass business loves the weir..... gives them lots of business.

Story.....

About 6 weeks ago I was catching some redfish on the marsh side and the water was really coming in hard [12"+ drop] and that much current is not easy to navigate going back out.

This one time that I had forgot my camera.....or I would have had a great video.

Two guys in a ~20 foot bay boat tried to get out..... tried????? When He approached he was off to the left side some and when ~ 3 boat lengths from the weir he turned to get "straight" but he over corrected and got the boat sideways some. Luckily he was going slow [too slow] and he cut power and stopped before hitting the structure.

With his lack of boating skills..... he did not want to try to try to straighten up his boat to make another try, so he drove back out into the marsh area. We [me and another boat] gave him some advice......keep the boat straight and give it more gas when you get to the opening.

After a couple minutes...... 2# try. This time he kept the boat in the middle a little better.....but he still over corrected when steering. When he kind-of had the boat straight in front of the opening....he gave it more gas. He still did not have "control" of the boat and it started going croaked as the nose of the boat got into the opening. The other person in the boat was no help to keep the boat from hitting the concrete. The boat hit the left side [where are most trolling motors mounted?] and nearly took off the top of the trolling motor.

The boat floated sideways away from the weir and again he drove back away from the weir. He made a 3 rd attempt but stopped short when he knew he could not make it through.

A boat "Just" on the other side of the weir had been watching..... and one of the guys jumped out onto the bank and walked around the weir to drive it through for him. Again the boat "driver" and I use that term "loosely" almost put his boat on the rocks along the bank when the other fellow got into the boat.

This time.... the experienced driver had no problems going through the weir.
