Question CCA........CPR or Kill tourny????

I was browsing around on the CCA Louisiana website and something caught my attention. Now please keep an open mind on this subject if possible. I do support the group and I appreciate what they have done for inshore fishing. However, I feel like I have the right to voice my opinion.

CCA has started a one of a kind program called "CPR" (catch, photo, and release) that rewards anglers for releasing big speckled trout. The prizes for the anglers include rod and reels, bragging rights, and a replica of the biggest fish.

My problem is that on the same exact webpage not one inch away there are ads for the STAR tournament. STAR rules require speckled trout to be brought in to certified weigh stations, so obviously catch and release is not an option.
What do you all think? IF this is a problem, what are some solutions?

It sounds like a catch 22 for the trout.

I guess what it means is that the real big hawgs are screwed but guys like 'exspeck' that catch four 7lb sows in one trip are going to be raking in the prizes.

double edge sword...Most large trout are caught prior to the STAR...maybe they hope numbers of large trout will be released prior to STAR, while some will be sacraficed for the benefit of contribution to CCA aka STAR tour. entry fee and membership...

Hang ON!!! Here is the deal!!! CCA STAR tournament runs from Memorial day to Labor day!! At this time 70% of the big trout have spawned already!! If you really think about the actually how many BIG trout are killed during this event its really not that many!! Most keep up with the weights and know what they need to place!!! SO if Big Lakes 1st place trout is 7lbs no one is going to go weight in a 6lb trout!!! Leader board is updated once a week!!!! This trounament also encouges kids to fish with there parents!!!! Catch N Release works as I have had 5 trout that I tagged this year caught and reported already!!!! STAR is an event to also raise money to help our fisheries!!!

Default i agree but.....

I think a lot of the trout spawn throughout the summer. And part of the reason for CPR is to allow the big trout to grow even bigger, not only to produce more eggs.

Do you realize how many people catch a 5 pound trout and think it weighs 8 or 9? It's obvious by the estimated weights we see every day on these fishing forums. I would think that a ton of the fish that are weighed in were not put on a scale on the water first.

Please keep in mind I'm not trying to tear down CCA.

People that don't know the difference between a 5 and 8 pound trout are not the type that release fish. They are going to keep them regardless of the tourney. All other categories, except the bass, are just won because someone who is fishing for a particular species happens to be a star entrant.

Can someone answer me this: For the STAR tournament - do the Trout and Redfish have to be weighed alive? Or from the ice chest?

actually you can release your fish for STAR. Only species that has to be killed is the tagged redfish. With Calcasieu Point as an official weigh station, you can release all your trout you weigh for STAR!

Stulb released his fish alive this weekend!

SO....C.P.R.!

I have a question. Do any of the fish that are not winners of their division win any prizes for that time period. Meaning, do the 2nd 3rd place get any prizes for their catch. I have never seen or heard anything except the big spec getting a boat or something.

No prizes for 2nd place or below, so if you know your fish doesn't take the leaderboard, release her to grow to that elusive 9 pound range.

Heard someone say this one day....."only way to catch a 9 pounder is to throw back all those 7 pounders you catch"

new tide is youth division.....youth division is done by a drawing. 7 means only 7 youth have weighed in a fish, or a 1 in 7 chance of winning the youth division drawing.
