Well we tried... Got to Sistanes landing at rollover.. Go to trim up my motor and its not trimming up.. Tried several things.. Finally got it going...
Ms. Broussard at landing indicates if we going offshore, be very careful... Vermilion corp has brought in a crew to remove old verm corp weir. On left side of canal heading So..to the mouth of rollover. They had to come in from the GoM. With tugs and barges with equipment.. So I get to mouth of rollover.. I can see waves breaking on both sides of a small channel that they dug to get the barges in.. They took 2 pilings in the middle out to get equipment in.. It was almost low tide when we ran the guanlet.. I had 4-5' of water under me so I did fine.. Wind was out of WNW. So Off we went.. at about 4 miles its 1-3'.. I'm headed to 45-50' of water.. About 10 miles out. We get to last platfrom in the 40 blks.. Winds starts to pick up.. Forecast was got 1-2' with 10 Mph winds.. Boy did they get it wrong.. I get out about 7 miles its white capping, with a 3' ground swells because of the tide I guess.. Winds blowin at least 15 MPH. Anyway I turned around and come back in.. Guy's. if U going to Rollover to castnet or crab at the Verm. Corp weir.. It's out of commission, and will be for I'm sure a long time... I tried castnetting at first 2 weirs on the right.. First weir water, was very low.. Caught a few med size pogie.. No shrimp... New weir on right (2nd weir) Water was so low when I threw my net, mud flew... Don't look like we will be getting any shrimp from Verm corp weir this yr... SO JUST BE AWARE THIS WEIR IS OUT OF COMMISSION. |

need some clarification please
I'm a little confused, I thought there was only one on the East side as you're headed South and that one was just redone about 4-5 years ago. It's got a great walkway allowing multiple places to castnet from. Is that the one you're talking about? or is there another one on the east side of the bayou before you get to the mouth of Rollover?

Thanks. I was there a few weekends ago for crabs. It certainly did not look like it needed refurbishment but I plead ignorance on such matters. I did have a little trouble coming in from the gulf at the back end of the tide and had to use the TM to clear the bar. Will be nice to have it dredged a little....for as long as it will hold until it fills in a gain anyway.

Weir Replacement
I agree, the weir was in good shape ... considering. They're dredging the channel from the DU Weir, on East side, to the GOM. Shrimp and crabs slow at best. How's the Rock cranking these days????

late update to this thread
Talked to a friend who "knows the scoop". He said the problem was that the weir was being undercut and had to be completely redone. Good news is that it is now working, but there is still some clean up work to be done. Just an FYI if that "poop" is correct.
