Yes, it is not good on a 4 wheel drive. The roll out is different. If it were a 2 wheel drive it would not matter . At least you will wear tires when in 4 WD . At worst , you will tear up driveline or transfer case.

X1000. Do not put it in 4x. Your front dif & transfer case will not be happy.

You talking about 3/16" difference, 235 80 17s are 31.80" dia. The 265 79 17 are 31.61" dia which is .19" or 3/16"

You should look at the manufacturer's specs for both sizes. If they are the same overall diameter it shouldn't be a problem. Even the same size tires from different manufacturers can have an inch or two difference in diameter. Very seldom is a tire the exact size that the size number says it should be.

Yes and yes. The diameter is what matters when you lock in 4x4, they have to me rotating at the same rate or you'll mess some stuff up.

It's better to have all the same size so you can rotate then all out and maintain a consistent circumference, but where you're at should be fine if your 4x4 usage is minimal (stuck in the mud, yanking something out). That small of a difference wouldn't have an effect unless your rolling 55 for a long period of time in snow or mud/slush.
