Default Shrimping hands

From a friend of my lil sister:

She went cast netting Tuesday, last week.. woke up during the night her hand was hurting. Saw that it was red. By morning Wednesday, it was swollen. Went to Urgent care and they gave her steroid shots and steroid pills Woke up Thursday in terrible pain and her wrist was swelling … She went back to urgent care Thursday morning and they gave her another steroid shot and more pills. By afternoon she was running fever and could not stand the pain. Went to St Pats emergency room (48 hours) the doctors @ St Pats said Steroids are the worst thing it makes the situation worsen. She is now in the hospital.
Yesterday she had to go to the burn center floor to the whirl pool and they scrapped the skin off just like a burn victim and clipped the skin and some of the bacteria off.
Whatever you do, if you or anyone you know catches this bacteria, if you go to your regular physician or an urgent care and they want to give you steroids DO NOT ALLOW THEM TO:
Also, if you have ANY cuts , scratches, and you fish or shrimp or crab… Please be careful… This bacteria is bad..

Pulled several staff(sp?) infections last year when I was crawfishing. My dr asked me if I was shrimpin, crawfishin or crabbin. He said all three carry some nasty stuff but they are all similar and the infections are a color unlike any other staff. He just hit me with antibiotics and I was good. Three times that happened!

They do swell like crazy though! They also turn feverish in a hurry. I guess I was lucky that none of em ever got that far away from me before I was able to get the correct treatment.

Damn....

I think I caught that in my finger once.. It stayed swolen for about 3 weeks, and hurt like hell... I kept digging in it, and cleaning it myself.. it might have not been that particular bacteria, but it was bad.. I almost went to the doctor, and I NEVER go to the Doc!

I got a few hardhead wounds that did that, but not the whole hand, just the finger.

Smile Handwashing after shrimping or fishing

Some time back I think I read something about using Clorox diluted approx 25-50 % strength. Put it in a spray bottle and douse your hand with it a few times after crabbing, shrimping, getting finned by a saltwater fish etc. Rinse off after a short time with bottled or fresh water. Antibacterial hand cleanser with an alcohol base is OK also but the bleach may be more effective. As the prvious posted pictures indicate this can be some bad s..t!!!

They have had 4 confirmed cases of Vibro on the lower Texas coast this summer. 2 have died and 2 made it with enormous hospital bills, bleach is cheap!

yep, some bad stuff. I did a school project on it. Vibrio vulnificus. its the same thing that kills people from eating oysters, but when a cut or ***** from fish, crab, shrimp, etc happens it is a flesh eating bacteria. Definitely bad news. I was scared that I was gonna get it from that hardhead finning I took a few weeks back.
