Motor Ticking

Anybody have any information on a Ford motor making a ticking sound..

I have a 08 f-150 with 96k miles, change oil regularly.. motor is a 5.4 triton..

never had any issues at all until recently noticing this slight ticking noise..

I was told it was lifters, and to put in Marvel Mystery Oil to fix this noise..

anybody have any other information on this?

I have the same truck and it ticked like a clock for years. Most mechanics said it was the lifters but it ended up being a loose spark plug. The guy said he removed it by hand.

Bad business for the VCT engines, it can be too thick and have an impact on the timing advance and retardation, which would lead to a whole lot of valve clatter. Been there on an 05!

Cam phasers. Ford had a lot of problems with the cam phasers on the 3 valve engines ticking. It won't hurt the motor. You can try a motor flush and then running a good oil. 5w20 I think is what is called for

I had a ford with 5.4. 193000 miles when I sold it with zero noise or oil burn. Bought it with 50k on it and ran slick 50 every 3rd oil change. The truck I had before had 230k with zero noise or oil burn and ran slick 50 in it also. Just sayin

boss, you will drive yourelf crazy unless you go have it looked at.

three main causes for ticking from least expensive to most:
-loose spark plug
-bad exhuast gasket or pin holes in the headers/manifolds
-lifters

there is some basic trouble shooting that can be done to determine what the issue is. My opinion, is that If I cannot do my own work, then I bring it to a dealer.

yea well i brought it to family auto, they listened to it and said to put in marvel mystery fluid, told me to check back with them after i did that and send me on my way... i have yet to put anything in motor..

the problem i have is, i bought this truck brand new, never late on oil changes, never ragged it out, i take care of my things, and now it is "ticking"

I do not want my $40K truck to be making noises that it is not supposed to be making.

I have the same year and make, mine started ticking a while back. Figured out it was an exhaust leak on the right side the motor at the manifold. Talked to my mechanic and he told me the last bolt on the manifold breaks for some reason, said he has repaired many. Takes the right front wheel off and taps the bolt out the head. It's an irritating sound.

This is why if i cannot fix the issue myself it goes to a dealer.

There is a lot of guys that believe those "fix-it in a can's" will actually fix issues. Look at it this way... it is just like when you get hurt, what does the doctor OR your mother do first? They give you pain killers... Right? This is what those "fix-it in a can's" are for, to fix the issue quickly and inexpensively. BUT, it is not a long term fix and the issue is still there and needs attention. The longer you go without fixing it, the more you will pay down the road.

Tell us this?

- Is the tick at start up and then fades away as the engine heats up?
- Does the tick get louder as it heats up?
- Is it constant regardless of temp and gets louder with RPM's?
- Can you tell where the tick is coming from when standing over the engine?

There are a few more troubleshooting questions, but these are the most common without looking at the truck.

it does not fade away after start up

it does not get louder as it heats up

it is consistent regardless of temp, and it DOES get louder with RPMs

i originally thought it was air leaking out, but i cannot locate tick.

at idle there is hardly any noise, even when i press gas in neutral it barely ticks.... it is mainly when there is resistance while driving and RPMs increase.

I remember smoke b gone, supposedly seals up worn rings on the piston.....there's no replacing metal in the cylinder on an old engine without an overhaul or new block. Thick oil just to slow the problem, but not fixed.

My 2007 does the same thing. It is a constant tick that is faint yet very annoying. You can't hear it if the radio is on. So, that's what I do. I turn the radio on. Haha. Doesn't fix the problem but I keep my sanity.

Mine is a 2005 F150 5.4 and has had a tic or tap noise for 50,000 miles now and it's had a tuneup, cam position sensors changed along with a few other things but I came to the conclusion of drive it for another 50,000 (that will put me at 200,000 miles) and then trade it in.... it's been a good truck and every mechanic says run it till it breaks because it's nothing major..... we shall see.
