Default Weirs and Jetties

Hit Grand Weir for some crabbing action this afternoon. Took the wife and kiddos and tied up to the post just outside the 250 foot zone on the inside of the weir (water was pouring into the marsh). Put out four lines and caught around 30 in less than 2 hours; some real good sized. There was a guy set up across from us pitching dead shrimp under a popping cork and hooking up with some good-sized reds.

We left when the kids got bored and headed to the jetties for some big red action. Fished cracked crab off the bottom and learned that 15 lb test is not sufficient for those monsters. Well, it probably would have been but I was having problems with the drags on my reels hanging and when that happens mid-run all that's left is the 'snap'. Caught one that took about 15 minutes to land and weighed in around 30 lbs on my scale. Wife broke off 4 others and son landed a 7 lb black drum to finish out the day. All in all a pretty good trip. No fish were kept.

Great job, man. Yeah, we learned that it takes 30+ lb braid and a smooth drag to consistently put bull reds in the boat, especially at the jetties where the current can be swift and there is so much junk on the bottom to snag on. But dem monsters are fun. Thanks for the report. We'll be headed that way soon and it's good to know it's still on.
