Had another good fish pull the hooks also. Had 2 more hits on TW and caught 1 on a jig. Water looked good. Talked to several people and it was tough today. Hope it gets better. |

I was lucky the skitterwalk stayed in my big girl last Saturday. Crazy exciting on topwater...nothing like it.

Always worse when you actually KNOW it's a trout and spits the hooks!! When I lose a smoker and never see it, it doesnt hurt as bad! We had a tough morn on the water as well.

Is there nothing you can do? Bigger hooks? Different hooks?

What kind of line are you fishing with? If your fishing braid a switch to mono would help?

With a top water I think it's just luck. Those big ones just find a way to shake it.

They have soft mouths.
Same softness from a 12" to a 30" just that the big one has more weight behind its shakes to pull the hooks. Spiral Out |

Yes I fish braid. Don't think it would make a difference. I keep my drag fairly loose for the big ones. Just happens, sucks, but it does. The bait actually gives them more leverage to dislodge the hooks. Have less shake offs with single hooks and plastics.

I know when I switched from braid to mono, my landing percentage shot up for trout. I had my drag loose as well with the braid, I think that zero stretch tears those mouths too easily.

I use braid too and I know I've pulled some b/c of no stretch.
But I've hooked up with more with 20-30' farther cast. I only use braid on spinning reels and my drag slips a little with a hard twitch on a mirodine. Spiral Out |
