Playing Booray
We always played with very simple rules. You have to folow suit and if you cant you have to trump You must play to win. We also often played what we called force" pronounced foursay whick means no less than 3 must play. \ When drinking we solved the arguement of who did not ante up by making the dealer ante for every one. The deal rotated so if playing quarter antie the dealer put up all the quarters 5 people 1.25$ and the deal went around the table. We played theat the dealors 5th card was trumps and this gave the dealor a slight advantage but since the deal rotated it evened out. What if anything did yall do different. Got any stories?? |

lol, we did that (dealer puts up all ante's) because of one guy who never remembered to put up. he wasn't doing it intentionally, he just never paid any attention until it was time to play. we called it the whitney rule, named after him.
I never knew other groups did that too, I guess everyone has a guy like that in their group to some extent. we play every Friday, or try to, sometimes if we only have 3 or 4 we just drink, hang out, and watch tv because its hard to play with so few. we do quarter up and pot up to $3 booray and you must put a minimum of $20 on the table each and play until midnite before you can quit, unless you lose your $20 or have to go to work early the next day or family stuff of course. just no winning early and then get up and leave with all the money stuff. that way everyone has a chance to win back what they lost. one other rule I assume you had as well is,card laid card played, in other words if you let go of the card you cant change your mind (reneige) so even if its still in the air, if you let go of it then its got to play. |

We played with variations of all the above. We also played $20 poverty. Meaning once U loss 20.. U played for free. But couldn't take more than 3 cards etc. etc. We also played if 2 guys played heads up.. U had to winn 4 cards. That way we'd split the pot and make it bigger..
We always cooked wildgame, ducks, deer, seafood, fish... Always something.. Gumbo Etc. |

We plaid ya hadda follow suit and ya hadda play to win. if an off suit was plaid you did not have one a bigger trump than you have was plaid you still had to play your trump you could not sluff off some other suit. That was part of it. I got in a game where they allowed sluffing and it messed me up in my strategy. I quit fast cause I was loosing plenty.
In my bunch card laid card played goes for all card games. Another family tradition is when you finish playing you knock the table to let everybody know ya through. No last minute plays that way. |

The only time I really played was on a night shift Plant turnaround.
There was a group of "foreman" that took off a few minutes early for each "break" to play. After a week, I started watch. There were 3 guys that really knew how to play and 3 or 4 others. When a couple of the guys stopped playing, I took their place. I held my own and won some in the next couple of weeks. But when a couple other stopped playing [because they were loosing], I did not know enough to out play these other 3 guys. I stopped after a couple more nights. It has been a long long time since I played any poker. But the last time was when my BIL asked if I wanted to join in with 2 of his friends. This was just a "friendly" game.... maybe nickel ante and quarter max bet. These 2 guys really did not know how to play and there was beer involved. It got embarrassing how much I was winning in this game. I started loosing on purpose after a couple hours and still left up $ 25+ in this small game. |

follow suite, or trump it, and if no trump, only then can you throw discards and you have to take the trick on your turn, no saving the king because the guy behind you flipped the ace. when its your turn, you have to beat whats on the board |

That's how we always played. $10 buy in, $.25 ante, match pot Bourre up to $2.50 When I was a kid my parents had a card game at least once a month. If they had 8 they would play Pedro and do a little tournament, if it was less than 8 they would play Bourre. Always a fun time, usually the game was preceded by a crab boil or a fish fry...... good times. I need to bring back that tradition. I hate Poker..... reason why is because all my friends started playing poker in the place of my favorite game, Pedro. Now ,no one wants to play Pedro. I was pretty good at it, still am and won a lot of money playing There's a bar near me that has a tournament once a week but they play follow suit and that blows my mind being that I learned the right way, cut throat. |

Played bouree since a young kid. Parents would play with same group every weekend. Kids would play outside or play at another table. Once we were old enough to drink with our parents (not yet 21) we were old enough to play with them.
Same rules as above, always follow suit and play to win or you renege and put up the pot or the pot limit. Also played 31 or Cadillac from time to time. For that game everyone started with 4 quarters. Lose a hand put up a quarter. Knock and lose a hand put up 2 quarters. Last person with money gets the pot. Then start over. Still play bouree at the camp. Have camp suppers on Thursday nights year long. I keep a bag of quarters in my truck so I am always ready to play. Grandpa has some bouree trophies he has won. Think one was from a tournament at casino. |

I'm surprised no one mentioned Euchre. Pretty close to booray but the jack the same suit of the trump is the highest card followed by the jack the same color of the trump. You also play the game with a partner.

Used to have get togethers where we played HI - LO. When it was familys we usually played a quarter a hand. when it was just the men a dollar a hand. everyone puts in and gets one card face down. dealer calls high or low. if he calls high hi card wins. If it's a tie those tied add another buck and get another card. winner takes the pot. winner is now dealer and calls high low and deals. if you have 15 -20 people playing use 2 -3 decks, ties are common and make pots grow bigger .
