Cut spanish sardines for chum, 40# flouro leader and 3/0 circle hooks. Throw a handful of chum to the rig leg, then throw the chum with hooks buried in them.
Crank your drags down as far as they go. When you hook up, walk the fish to the back of the boat before you start reeling. If you can stop that first run, you've got them beat. |

Another Tip
I generally start with 40# flouro leaders and go lighter or heavier form there. For length, I'll pull a length of leader with arms straight apart (about 5ft). Some days it's 1 pull, others it's 2. The fish will tell you what they want.
If you're lucky enough and can get away with 50lb or 60lb leader, you'll land a lot more of the stud mangroves. They're almost impossible to stop with less than 40. |

I need to stop spending money on gas for the boat for a month so I can get some new rods and reels....

As much as you're using that new boat, you ought to have plenty saved up!
