35 Whelen

I have had trouble getting my gun to group. I have tried several different brands of ammo some are better than others but none are very consistent. I was told that the scope base that comes with the could be flexing and causing the problem. I have Leupold rings and a zeiss conquest scope. When the scope was mounted lock tight was used. The other issue is I can't find a different base to fit the gun. Any suggestions?

What gun? Bases came with gun? What kind of group is your best?

CVA Apex 35 Whelen best group about 5" at 100 yards. The base was already on the gun when I got it

If its Leupold bases & rings I doubt it's the bases flexing, even though locktite was used doesn't mean everything is tight. Aluminum will compress when wrenched down on. Maybe something to check.
What grain you shooting? Could be a difference there. 200 grain seems to be most popular, they do make a 180 grain which I like.

Bases are Leupold? If not that could be your problem. I would only use Leupold rings with Leupold bases

Lots of folks reporting marginal and poor accuracy with the Apex. I guess there are some good shooters out there, but the gun seems to be an iffy proposition. Hard recoiling guns can flex and move a lot when they are fired, and precision machine becomes much more important. It is much easier to make an accurate .223 Rem than an accurate .35 Whelen.

the base that comes on those is aluminum im pretty sure. my 4570 and .444 were both alum, you need iron. you could try different ammo but 5'' groups is pretty bad even for just your gun not liking it. if you cant get any better id send it back.

Call Sonny at Acadiana Outfitters in New Iberia. He should be able to lead you in the right direction on your grouping issue.

If you decide to get rid of it, think about a New England firearms single shot. My .444 is amazingly accurate well out to 250 yards.

I agree, the NEF rifles have good accuracy (1-2 MOA) for the price point and also have interchangeable barrels.

I got my issues fixed. The hinge pin was too loose fitting. Had it changed and now it shoots perfectly

I have just gotten some of my coponents on the .35 Whelen Iam building. I am building a TC Encore, but not using the TC barrel. Ordered a custom 26" from MGM then will have a muzzel brake machined here w/ a blank.

Not sure if they changed the calibers for primitive or not but last yr when I bought my gun it was still .38 caliber or larger .....I was told they were trying to get the .35 included but as of last hunting season it was not.

It is now legal for this hunting season and yes, it is the go to for primitive!
